The Technical Safety Standards Authority (TSSA), the regulator for elevating devices in Ontario, are launching a new set of compliance standards that will go into effect on March 1, 2023.
How will this affect you?
During TSSA periodic inspections they review different safety components and operation of the elevator and escalator device(s). These include high-risk non-compliances associated with the devices and will also include reviewing the records of maintenance and testing from the Elevator/Escalator contractor.
Starting March 1, the compliance standards will outline different inspection procedures and timelines to correct deficiencies. These also include areas responsible for the owner of the elevator and escalator device(s).
The new timelines will be between 0 days (removing the unit from service) to 14 days to correct the high-risk non-compliances.
As owners or building operators, these new regulations, responsibilities and timelines may pose larger service interruptions in your buildings.
